Sculptural Lounge Chairs That Can Carry a Room

1. Pacha Lounge Chair

GUBI, designed by Pierre Paulin

Low, rounded and almost cloudlike, the Pacha Lounge Chair brings softness into a room without feeling visually heavy. Pierre Paulin designed it in 1975 as part of a more relaxed approach to living, removing traditional chair legs and bringing the body closer to the floor.

It works particularly well in open seating arrangements where it can be appreciated from several sides. In a pale upholstery it becomes calm and sculptural, while a stronger colour gives the same form a much more playful presence.

2. Utrecht Armchair

Cassina, designed by Gerrit T. Rietveld

The Utrecht is built from clear geometric volumes, yet it never feels cold. Its seat, back and armrests appear almost like separate architectural planes brought together into one compact chair.

The visible stitching reinforces its construction and gives the upholstery a graphic quality. It is especially effective in interiors that need structure, whether surrounded by softer furniture or placed alone as a strong reading chair.
