How to Choose the Right Rug Size for Every Room

A rug can be beautiful in isolation and completely wrong once it enters the room.

Usually, the problem is not pattern or material.

It is size.

Rugs establish boundaries. They visually connect furniture and give a group of objects a shared territory.

When the rug is too small, the composition begins breaking apart.

This guide starts with one principle:

Size the rug around the furniture arrangement, not around the empty piece of floor you want to cover.

Living rooms

Start by identifying the complete seating arrangement.

• Sofa.
• Armchairs.
• Coffee table.
• Side tables.

Then look at the footprint they create together.

In many living rooms, the most convincing result comes from a rug large enough to extend beneath at least the front portion of the principal seating.

In larger rooms, placing the entire seating arrangement on the rug can create an even stronger sense of enclosure.
