Advantages & Limitations
Advantages
- Colour continues through the entire panel
- Exposed edges do not require edge banding
- Suitable for detailed machining and engraving
- More moisture resistant than standard MDF
- Available in a coordinated range of colours
Limitations
- Usually requires a protective surface finish
- Can swell after prolonged water exposure
- Heavy compared with some panel materials
- Colour can vary slightly between batches
- Cutting produces fine wood-fibre dust
06
Maintenance & Care
Dust with a soft cloth and clean with a lightly damp cloth when necessary. Remove spills promptly and dry the surface immediately, especially around joints, cut-outs and exposed edges.
Avoid abrasive cleaners, harsh solvents and standing water. Follow the finish supplier’s instructions for maintaining oiled, waxed or lacquered surfaces.
07
Installation Considerations
- Allow panels to acclimatise before fabrication.
- Use sharp tools and effective dust extraction.
- Seal faces and edges for the intended application.
- Support shelves and long spans to prevent deflection.
- Use compatible fixings, adhesives and finishes.
08
Sustainability
Coloured MDF can make efficient use of wood fibres and avoids the need for a separate decorative surface layer. Request responsibly sourced wood, verified emissions information and low-VOC finishes. Design components for durability, repair and efficient material use.
